Superworms: Nature's Solution to Museum Maintenance
In the bustling city of Mashhad, Iran, a unique challenge faced researchers at Ferdowsi University's natural history museum. With an influx of animal specimens, from roadkill to injured birds, the team was running out of storage space and freezer capacity. The solution? A surprising one: superworms, the hefty beetle larvae, were put to work as nature's own cleaning crew.
Niloofar Alaei Kakhki, a bioinformatician, led the innovative study published in PLOS One. She and her team discovered that superworms, native to South and Central America, are adept at cleaning animal skeletons. These worms, each the size of a human finger, possess large chewing mandibles, making them efficient flesh removers. What's more, they're available at pet stores, making them an accessible and cost-effective solution.
The process is straightforward: pre-clean the specimens, soften them in hot water, and introduce the superworms. Alaei's team found that 10 to 15 larvae are ideal for cleaning a variety of specimens, from mice to wolves, without causing damage to delicate bones. This method is a significant improvement over traditional chemical treatments, which can be environmentally harmful, and boiling, which is time-consuming and potentially damaging.
However, Damien Charabidze, a forensic entomologist, raises concerns. He questions the control of superworms compared to dermestid beetles, which are known to chew through feathers and dried skin. Additionally, superworms' preference for a vegetarian diet might make them less effective on cadavers. Marna Sakalem, an anatomist, shares similar reservations, noting that dermestid beetles have not been observed escaping in her team's five-year experience.
Despite these considerations, the superworm's success in cleaning skeletons is undeniable. Alaei's research opens up new possibilities for museums, especially smaller ones with limited resources. It presents a sustainable and efficient approach to maintaining collections, offering a fascinating insight into nature's ingenuity in solving human problems.
