Australia's Energy Transition: Breaking the Wind Drought in NSW (2026)

The wind drought in Australia's coal-dependent state of New South Wales (NSW) is finally being addressed, with a focus on two major energy consumers: the Tomago aluminium smelter and the state's proposed data centers. The federal and NSW governments have announced a $2.5 billion plan to transition Tomago to 100% renewable energy by 2033, requiring several gigawatts of new wind capacity, solar, and storage. The recent generation tenders have awarded underwriting agreements to several wind projects, including Windlab's Junction Rivers, Acen Renewables' Valley of the Winds, and Squadron's Spicers Creek. However, the lack of wind projects under construction and the skew towards solar in data center PPAs highlight the need for more wind capacity. The data centers' requirements will likely necessitate an additional 1.4 GW of new wind capacity and substantial battery storage. This is a crucial step towards addressing the wind investment drought and ensuring a sustainable energy future for NSW, despite the challenges posed by the retirement of coal-fired power generators.
